If you’re traveling in upstate New York this month, you probably won’t have much difficulty finding barns on rural country roads.  Finding barns on suburban Long Island can be more of a challenge, although you may see some on the North Fork.  But shooting barns on private property without permission is not a good idea.

Where to find barns on Long Island:

Barns at Smithtown Historical Society
Old Bethpage Village
Red Barn at Frank Melville Park in Setauket
Caleb Smith Park

Tips on shooting barns:

  • Try to capture what makes a particular barn unique.

  • Use angles to demonstrate scale.  Avoid a flat two-dimensional shot.

  • In post processing emphasize texture, clarity and contrast.

  • Use light to enhance. Soft warm light instead of midday sun.

  • No need to restrict yourself to the whole barn.  Details can tell a story.
