_2026 May Theme: Your Backyard

Eric Loehwing | Published on 5/1/2026
The theme this month is Your Backyard.  For some this will be as easy as walking out the back door.  For those living in an apartment, this may require shooting in a friend’s or family member’s backyard.  Some may capture an entire backyard at once; others may opt for a smaller part of a backyard.

Tips:
  • Focus on good light (golden hour is best) or on overcast days that offer even, diffused light to avoid harsh shadows.

  • Change your perspective by shooting low or from a unique angle.

  • Create depth by using natural frames (trees, doorways) or by using leading lines (paths, fences).

  • Avoid cluttered backgrounds.  Tidy up distracting elements before shooting.

  • Take multiple shots with different settings to ensure you get a perfect exposure.
