Hello Folks,

The Steering Commission wil meet for the third time this year on Monday, September 8th.  Please feel free to contact any of the SC members to express your views on possible changes or improvements to the club.  Members of the SC are: Marie Altenburg, Dorothy Chanin, Mike Azzato, Janina Krach,  Alan Lichtenstein, Eric Loehwing, and myself.  Find our email address on the website under the Membership Directory .

All feedback is welcome!
Larry Kelly

You mcan also email me back with any feedback or suggestions regarding the Newsletter, at kingsparkphotoclub@gmail.com.

Our annual picnic will be held on Wednesday, August 27th, in the upper picnic area of Nissequogue River State Park, from 3 to 8pm. The park is located at 799 Saint Johnland Road in Kings Park. It used to be the Kings Park Psychiatric Center.

We need a headcount by Monday 8/25.  Please advise me if you're coming, and also if you are bringing a guest.  The club will pay for food and incidentals (plates/utensils).  Bring your own drinks, and $4 is requested to cover costs if bringing a guest.
Food for the picnic will be delivered at 5:30 PM so people working that day can participate.

Dick Chen is preparing for a club macro shooting exercise, so bring your gear for that and also for the sunset later on.

Please note that the Park closes at sunset (approx. 7:30 PM that day) and we will need to move to the Bluff for the sunset/blue hour period. Also, the Park charges a fee to park there, but if you are age 62+ you can park for free. (If you are still a youngster, we can make arrangements to meet you close by and then smuggle you in.)

Our Social Media Presence

Our members' photographs are displayed on many different media other than the official website.

We have:
  • a "Members Only" Facebook Group
  • a Facebook Public Page called "Photography Tips, Tricks & Info"
  • Kings Park Photography Club Instagram Account
  • an Instagram Hashtag Account reachable by searching for #kingsparkphotclub, and
  • Individual Member Showcases on Flickr, 52frames and Instagram.
One of the drawbacks of the KPPC website is that although you can see photos and slideshows, you can't express your reaction to them or comment on them. But you can express comments and likes on the other social media.  This is a list of our many social media sitesSee wonderful member photos posted every day, and tell one another how you appreciate their work!

(Some of these require you to have an account, and others only allow you if you ask to follow them).

Next Photo Share Meeting:  Monday, September 15th 2025, 7 PM

Photo Shares are meetings in which members submit any two photos they want, for discussion and critique by the other attending members.

In August we concentrated more on the photos themselves than on the story behind each photo  Suggestions were offered on better focus, composition, and defining the objective of the photo. At the end of the session the photographers were identified, and got to add their comments.

Photos from our July Theme Contest "Landscapes":

What's the difference between a landscape shot that a casual photographer might take, and a photo that wins awards?

Read George Joseph's description of how he shot the winning landscape photo in our August contest.  He selected the right location using several apps.  He set up the shot for balance and depth.  He chose the ideal time for perfect lighting, and he adjusted his RAW image for exposure, highlights, shadows and tones.

Featured Album: August 2025 - Air Show

September's Featured Album  is Film Photography Highlights by Mike Weber

Interested in shooting with film instead of digitally?  Film (or analog) photography works by coating transparent film hidden in the camera until light makes contact and changes its color. (as opposed to digital photography in which an electronic sensor reacts to the light, capturing the images on pixels.)

To try it, you have to invest in a film camera. You need to take the film to a lab (such as CVS or Walgreens, or specialty labs). But the results can be amazing, as are the ones in Mike's September's album.

The photo featured above was shot with LomoChrome Purple Petillant 35mm film, on Mike's Canon F-1 camera.

Just for Fun:
