KKPPC Club Activity for October, 2025 - Issue 5
Hello Folks,

Our September Club Meeting took place on Wednesday, 9/17 at the KP library.  There were a few announcements and updates, and then we did breakout sessions based on gear brands/types.  It seemed like this activity was pretty well received as the Library had to kick us out!  I know I picked up a new technique and was able to play “Bruce Gliden” with my tiny TT Artisan flash unit.  Canon, Nikon, and Sony users were present and sharing information.

The Third Quarter Steering Commission Meeting was held on 9/8.

 1. The SC voted to recommend to the membership that the word “informal” be removed from the Club Mission Statement.  There would be no change to the club itself resulting from this change in wording. Additional information will be sent to all club members on the proposed change and a vote will be scheduled at a future date.

 2.  The “professional feedback session” was scheduled for Thursday, 11/6. See below for more info.

3.  Al volunteered to contact local newspapers to advertise the club.  He is also arranging to have the Smithtown News, a local newspaper, interview us in coordination with the upcoming club photo display scheduled for December in the Community Room of the KP Library building.

Keep an eye out on the website and Facebook pages for impromptu local photo shoots organized by various members. We’ll try to get the word out by email as well.

All feedback is welcome!
Larry Kelly

“Pro Feedback Session:” Thursday 11/6 7pm-8:30pm via Zoom

This will be a very worthwhile program for members wishing to improve their photography, or desiring feedback on new methods or techniques they are experimenting with.

Participation is entirely voluntary on the part of the member.  Zoom support will be provided for those unfamiliar with using Zoom; and we plan on recording the sessions with a link so that they may be viewed separately from the meeting, so you may send in photos for feedback and then review the feedback later without participating in the Zoom session.

Our “judge” will be Chuck Pine of the Park West Camera Club in Manhattan.  Chuck has 70 years of experience in photography, including teaching it at Columbia University, NY Institute of Photography, the United Nations, the Metropolitan Camera Club Council, and the Park West Camera Club.  He has been a camera club judge and presenter for 30 years, as well as leading photography trips and workshops all over the world. A complete bio and link to his camera club will be coming soon.

I spoke with Chuck and he encourages novice or beginning photographers to participate. He will be offering supportive and constructive feedback on all photos and there will be no scoring or judging of photos.  We have some details to work out and we will be giving complete instructions out to you well before the event.  And we will be there to assist you on technical matters (re-sizing photos, etc.).

What photos should I send in?  You can send in any photo.  It could be your “best photos ever taken,” a photo you are thinking of entering in a competition, an experimental technique you are trying out, a new genre of photography you are trying out, whatever you’d like.

The annual picnic was held on Wednesday, August 27th, in the upper picnic area of Nissequogue River State Park. Thank you Dick, for preparing setups for many of us to experiment with macro photography.  Photos from the picnic appear below.

Next Photo Share Meeting:  Monday, October 13th 2025, 7 PM

Photo Shares are meetings in which members submit any two photos they want, for discussion and critique by the other attending members.

In September we suggested cropping and the elimination of extraneous details as helpful tools in many of the photos.  We also discussed best ways to capture animals, focusing on the eyes, and adjusting shutter speeds to capture more detail in action shots. At the end of the session the photographers were identified and got to add their own comments on each of the photos.

Congratulations to Dorothy for winning the August Theme Contest.

Thank you all for choosing my photo of Joy as the winning photo for the Fill The Frame Contest. Joy is a senior cat now. She was found as a tiny kitten wandering in the woods of the Nissequogue River State Park twelve years ago.  She was barley weaned. She has become a most interesting and loving cat; she greets everyone who comes into our home and demands attention.

She gives unlimited love, meeting me at my driveway whenever I come home, demanding attention and leading me into the house. She is truly a lap cat wanting to be held and cuddled all the time. I am sure she is thrilled to have her photo as the winning entry for the month of August, Fill the Frame contest.
Congrats to other entries that won votes:
  • Vinny's shots of a white seagull, both 1 & 2
  • Eric's shot#3 of golden oyster mushrooms
  • Karen's photo of a swimming turtle, #6
  • Fran's jellybeans, photo#7
  • Karolin's sweet llama portrait, photo#17
  • Karolin's purple coneflower, entry #18
  • Mike Weber's stickers & graffiti sign, photo#24
