August 13th Monthly Meeting

George Joseph, our new President, kicked off the meeting by introducing Art's montage of this month's Before Meeting Photo Collection, with each contributing member commenting on their submitted photos.

Attending the meeting were George, Art, Mike, Jonathan, Dorothy, Karolin, Agnes, Gerta, Dick, Janina, Bob, and our newest member, Frank Rende. Frank is the owner of FMR Photography, and a photography course instructor at the Art League of LI and WSWHE Boces. Welcome, Frank!

Next, Art showed a youTube video by David Bergman giving reasons, and advanced techniques, for black & white photography.

In the video, Bergman explained that b&w is powerful, dramatic, and timeless, boiling down a photo to its essentials.

Tips from Bergman on Shooting in B&W:

•  Shoot first in color
•  Shoot RAW
•  Don't simply convert to B&W
•  Use color filters to enhance the black & white
•  A red filter darkens the sky on a B&W landscape

•  A red or yellow filter lightens skin tones on a B&W portrait

In conclusion:

C
olor can be distracting, and sometimes adds nothing to the impact of a photo.

B&W can take even a mundane photo from flat & dull, to powerful, dramatic, timeless and artistic.

After the youTube video, Art gave a presentation using his own techniques for creating stunning B&W photos via Photoshop.

He gave detailed, multi-layered examples of  the way he uses the Curves graphical tool in Photoshop to adjust the highlights, shadows and midtones of his landscapes and portraits.

View Art's Presentation Slideshow to see, step by step, how to use color filters to enhance monochrome images.

He demonstrates his techniques and their impact in the wonderful images appearing in the slideshow.
