Recap of TWA field trip
On Friday February 2nd four intrepid members of the camera club made a hastily arranged but rewarding trip to the TWA Hotel and Museum at JFK Airport. Meeting at the Park ’n Ride on Exit 50 of the LIE, they then carpooled into the airport. This was a seasonally well-chosen field trip, as the cold and the rain would have made an outdoor excursion uncomfortable.
The museum Click here, curated by the New York Historical Society, allows visitors to experience the Jet Age through authentic artifacts, interactive displays and personal narratives. The museum exhibits recall an earlier time (the 1950s and 60s) when air travel was an adventure to experience, not an ordeal to endure. Travelers dressed up, as can be seen in a few of the photos.
Some other reminders of the era brought a smile to our members: the VW Micro Bus, a precursor to the modern SUV and now an expensive collector’s item; the 10¢ Pay Telephone, from the days before the ubiquitous cellphone. Those interested in furniture design will recognize the tulip design of the Saarinen chair and table, Mid-Century Modern, available for purchase at Design Within Reach. Sharp-eyed observers will also note the change in suitcase design. No shoulder straps or wheels, travelers carried their suitcases by the handle.

Great photos with a retro look!
The architecture looks bright and futuristic and props brought me back in time. Looks like an interesting place to explore!
Nice shots. You really brought out the wonderful architecture.
Haha It looks like the kitchen wallpaper when I bought my house.
